Frequently Asked Questions

What is your availability, and how often do you take on new students?

New students are accepted throughout the year as space permits. My schedule gets very, very full within the first few weeks of a school term, and unfortunately I am not always able to accept new clients at certain times. Because lesson times are limited, early inquiries are encouraged—particularly before the beginning of the school year and during the months leading up to IB and AP examinations.

Do you tutor on the weekends?
Yes. My students are in school on weekdays, and as such, most of my tutoring is done in the evenings (North American students) and on the weekends (around the world).

Where are you located?
SmartSmith is currently located in Colorado, United States (UTC -6 summer, UTC -7 winter).

How long are lessons?
Standard lessons are 60 minutes.

Do you tutor students internationally?
Yes. I work with students in many different countries and time zones, including North America, Asia, and Europe.

Can lessons be scheduled more than once per week?
Absolutely. Many students meet once, twice, or even three times per week depending on their goals and courses taken. In the past I have even met with some students 6 days a week.

Do you assign homework?
Certainly this can be done upon request. If requested, I provide carefully selected practice problems to reinforce what we covered in the lesson, along with answer keys and solutions.

I have a test coming up. Can I schedule extra lessons with you in addition to the regular ones?
Absolutely! This happens all the time. Of course, this is subject to availability of slots, but we can always find something that works.

Can I just contact you every once in a while when I might need a lesson?
Usually not. I only work with students on a regular basis - the minimum number of hours is once per week. The reason for this is twofold: first, you will not see any noticeable improvement with less than one hour per week. The second is that my schedule is bursting during the school year, and if we don't have a set time and day of the week to meet, I cannot guarantee that I can see you when you want.
